When evacuation is part of service
- A compressor, condenser, hose, or another refrigerant-circuit component has been replaced.
- Air or moisture may have entered during an open-system repair.
What a vacuum can and cannot show
Air and moisture can interfere with A/C performance and component life. A system that does not maintain the required vacuum needs investigation, but holding vacuum alone does not prove that no leak can occur under operating pressure. Dedicated leak testing may still be necessary for the reported concern.
Typical process considerations
The system must first be prepared and any refrigerant handled appropriately. The evacuation method and required conditions depend on the vehicle and the work performed. Once the circuit is suitable for charging, the specified refrigerant amount and any required oil adjustments are addressed separately. Operational checks follow the completed service sequence.
Questions for the work order
Ask whether the estimate includes recovery, repairs, evacuation, and recharge or only one of those steps. Explain any previous open-system work or long period without refrigerant. Evacuation will not correct a leaking component or a control fault, and refrigerant must not be vented as a way to prepare for it.
