Symptoms that guide inspection
- Engine temperature rises in traffic but improves when airflow increases at road speed.
- A fan makes unusual mechanical noise or does not operate when commanded under the appropriate conditions.
Check why the fan is not working
Fuses, relays, wiring, temperature inputs, control modules, or drive components can prevent correct operation. An electric fan may not be expected to run continuously, so observing it stopped does not establish failure. Mechanical fan clutches have their own operating behavior and inspection criteria.
Typical replacement approach
Testing identifies whether the fan assembly is the failed component. Replacement includes correct mounting, shroud clearance, electrical or mechanical connections, and inspection of nearby damage. Operation is checked under suitable conditions after installation. A/C performance may also be affected by airflow, but refrigerant concerns require separate evaluation.
Safety and scheduling
Report when the temperature changes and whether A/C performance changes at the same time. Keep hands and tools away from electric fans, which can start unexpectedly. Stop safely if the engine overheats; continued driving while waiting for airflow can cause additional damage.
